If you are in the central part of Italy, somewhere near the province of Terni, Umbria region, I recommend visiting the Marmore Falls or Cascata delle Marmore (Italy).

As far as I understand, the Marmore Falls have existed for over 2000 years. In general, it is a unique sight, since the waterfall is the highest in Europe (165 meters).

I have visited it three times already, and it is always nice to come here for a walk anyway. If we talk about the last time, I had the feeling that I would come here often if I lived somewhere nearby. The waterfall gave a certain feeling of peace.

In addition to the waterfall, I personally find the area around it very pleasant, where there are various cafes and a lawn where you can have a good time.

How everything is arranged

The entrance fee in 2022 was 10 euros. But if you need a transfer, you can check offers here:

The waterfall is artificially amplified, which is why it has such an unrivaled appearance. The switching on time, or let’s call it water amplification, is from 11:00 to 13:00, and in the afternoon, from 15:00 to 19:00. I suspect that the time may change; it is worth checking it on the official website or already on site.

There are two entrances to the waterfall: from above and at its foot. I liked arriving and parking from below more.
Even if you climb and don’t want to walk back down, there is a bus that runs from the bottom to the top. It’s not difficult to find its stop. You can use it.

There is a small market at the bottom, near the parking lot and the ticket office. There are also places where you can have a snack and a coffee.

After entering the fenced area, there are also cafeterias, quite simple, but you can also eat and drink something refreshing there. When climbing, there are also tables with benches for resting at some points.

At the beginning of the climb, there are three points with observation platforms. One of these platforms is very wet. Not knowing this, I was surprised when I saw that in the heat, some people entered the area wearing mountain trekking shoes. Then I understood why they chose such shoes.

You can also buy a raincoat at the market or bring it with you so as not to get too wet. However, getting wet is not so scary. Personally, I managed without it, and nothing critical happened.

Trails

In the tourist and pedestrian zone of the Marmore waterfall, you can walk 6 marked and marked trails, which allow the visitor to observe the waterfall from panoramic points of impressive beauty.

I will not mention all of them, but only those that seemed the most noticeable:

Lower Belvedere
Upper Belvedere
Specola

Previously, there was one point on the way with a tunnel and a balcony of lovers, but it is now closed; it seems that something happened, maybe some floods.

Another particularly interesting place is Specola, a small tower built in 1781 by Pope Pius VI near the upper Belvedere. In this magical place, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the first jump of the waterfall, and when creating special atmospheric conditions, which depend on the presence of water vapor in the air, you can see incredibly beautiful rainbows.

Rainbows can be observed in the upper part of the waterfall and in the lower part.
It is very beautiful and spectacular.

If you go all the way from the lower belvedere to the upper one, the travel time is:
40 minutes ascent, 25 minutes descent

The Cascata delle Marmore, thanks to its total height difference of 165 meters, is the highest artificial waterfall in the world and is the result of the extraordinary ingenuity of the Romans.

In 271 AD, the Roman consul Curio Dentato commissioned this work with a dual purpose: to drain the waters that had stagnated in the plain around Rieti and to connect the Nera and Velino rivers.

Over the centuries, this project has undergone various interventions

Since then, the Marmore Falls have been one of the most beautiful and attractive natural monuments in Italy.

So I recommend setting aside a day and visiting to admire this beauty.
