Small, green, very lively and at the same time calm. Exactly the kind of travel format when it seems that you have &#8220;<em>looked into the real Greece&#8221;<\/em>, and not into a tourist scenery.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the perfect island for a short escape from Athens, for leisurely bike rides, for nature, silence and the turquoise sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Agistri is Located and What Makes it Special?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Agistri (\u0391\u03b3\u03ba\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9) is located in the Saronic Gulf, very close to mainland Greece. It is so compact that you can cross it from one end to the other in about 20 minutes (by car), of course longer by other means of transport &#8211; but in that precisely is its charm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts worth knowing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The island&#8217;s area is about <strong>13 km\u00b2<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>population \u2014 <strong>approximately about 1,000 permanent residents<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>over <strong>80% of the territory is covered with pine forests<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pine trees grow almost to the <em>water&#8217;s edge<\/em> &#8211; a rarity for the Greek islands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Agistri is often called <strong>one of the greenest islands in Greece,<\/strong> and this is no exaggeration: the smell of pine needles accompanies almost the entire trip, the nature here is incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get to Agistri<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most convenient route is <strong>through Athens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Athens \u2192 <strong>Piraeus<\/strong> port<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ferry or high-speed catamaran to Agistri (with a short stop at Aegina) takes: from <strong>1 to ~1.5 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you take into account the journey to the port, waiting and transfers, <strong>it takes about 2 hours<\/strong>, which is fully consistent with the real travel experience.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Our route passed through the neighboring island of <strong>Aegina<\/strong>, from where it is literally 10-15 minutes by water to Agistri.<br>We arrived at the port of Megalochori, and in the evening we returned from Skala Port (they are quite close, but it will probably take 30 minutes to walk, you can get there by car in 5 minutes). <\/p>\n\n\n<div Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are only a few settlements on Agistra, and each has its own character:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Skala<\/strong> \u2014 port, cafe, life, tourist center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Megalochori <\/strong>is a more traditional village, quiet and &#8220;local&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limenaria<\/strong> \u2014 the smallest, very quiet, almost meditative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are not resort towns, but <strong>real Greek villages<\/strong> where it is easy to get lost in time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure Island: No Way Without Transport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Agistri is small, but <strong>without transportation you won&#8217;t see as much as you could.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What You Can Rent?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>bicycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>electric bicycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>motorcycles \/ scooters \/ tricycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>auto<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1<strong> Important:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>more rental points open in high season<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in the off-season (March, April) rentals are open, but some types of transport may already be taken<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bicycles are usually available even off-peak<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not very confident on your bike, <strong>your arms will get really tired<\/strong>, especially on longer distances and switchbacks. The views from the top of the cliff are simply incredible. In the summer it works as a full-fledged recreation area, in March it is quiet, open space and the feeling of an &#8220;empty resort&#8221;. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skala Beach<\/strong><br>The most accessible beach near the port. Good for swimming and walking, but less &#8220;wild&#8221;. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aponisos<\/strong><br>A small island near Agistri, across a low bridge. <strong>Aponisos <\/strong>is privately owned and the family of the owners have created a cozy, festive atmosphere with sun loungers, cool drinks. One of the most beautiful places in the region. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" of the route,<\/strong> not an exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The road across the island: what is most memorable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Traveling from one end of the island to the other isn&#8217;t just travel, but an experience filled with discoveries and adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will pass:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the central part with small shops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>villages where life goes very slowly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>l<strong>ong stretches of road through a pine forest<\/strong>, surrounded by pure nature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is where those moments happen that you don&#8217;t plan for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>unexpected panoramas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>silence without people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>wild birds<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these moments can be an <strong>encounter with flamingos<\/strong>, we
